Many people delay seeing a rheumatologist because they assume joint pain is normal or will resolve with painkillers. Certain warning signs suggest inflammatory or systemic disease that benefits from early specialist assessment.
Seven signs to take seriously
- Morning stiffness lasting more than 30–60 minutes
- Visible swelling in one or more joints
- Symptoms in the same joints on both sides of the body
- Unexplained skin rash with joint pain or sun sensitivity
- Fever, weight loss, or profound fatigue with joint symptoms
- Joint pain starting in your 20s or 30s with back stiffness
- Poor response to rest and over-the-counter pain relief over weeks
What to expect at your visit
Bring previous test results and a list of medicines, including supplements. The rheumatologist will examine all relevant joints, review labs and imaging, and explain whether you need observation, further testing, or treatment. Referral from another doctor is helpful but not always required.
Earlier specialist care for inflammatory arthritis can change the trajectory of disease — waiting for deformity is unnecessary with modern treatment.
If you recognise several of these signs, book a rheumatology consultation at RAC Nepal. Clarifying the diagnosis is the first step toward a plan that protects your joints and your quality of life.
